There is a story told
A legend known afar
About Captain Donlon
In the Vietnam War
Born in Saugerties New York
In 1934
Eighth child of ten
Let me tell you more
Mother’s name was Marian
Father known as Paul
Captain Donlon joined the Special Forces
Answered JFK’s call
In the early morning
July of '64
The enemy came on
Knockin' at the door
Donlon led his forces
For five hours long
While mortar rounds were raining
slowed the Viet Cong
The assault came on
A VC Battalion
Over 800 strong
Attacked Nam Dong
(Chorus:)
Oh Captain Donlon
God's grace flows your way
You fought for our freedom
In that war far away
You wear the Medal of Honor
The first in the war
Thank you for your service
America asks for no more
Under heavy fire
through the dark of night
Long waited daylight
Ended the fight
The enemy retreated
The assault over come
The battle was over
Special Forces had won
Master Sergeant Alamo
Sergeant Houston, too
W.O. Conway
Died for me and you
(Chorus repeated twice)
